Practical Test

The driving test is designed for you to show you understand and can demonstrate your knowledge of the highway code and the theory of driving safely. Throughout the test your Examiner will be looking for an overall safe standard of driving, including when you are carrying out your set exercises, which you will have practised with your Instructor.

The driving test is straightforward and has been designed to see if you can drive safely in different road and traffic conditions, know the highway code and demonstrate this throughout your drive.

Once you meet your Examiner he will ask you to sign the declaration on your test sheet also ask if you want your Instructor to come with you.As you make your way to your car your Examiner will carry out an eyesight check if you fail this your test will not be able to continue.

Once you have read a registration plate correctly he will ask you a couple of vehicle checks(these are the Show me Tell me Q&A) if one of these are answered incorrectly then it goes as a driver fault.

The driving part of your test will last about 40mins during which you will be examined on your general driving ability and ability to reverse your vehicle safely. one manoeuvre will be chosen from

  • Turn in the road
  • Reversing around a corner
  • Reverse Parking

You may also be asked to carry out an Emergency Stop exercise.

Throughout the drive you should drive in the way you have been taught. If you make a mistake dont worry as it might be a less serious driving fault and may not affect your result, However if you commit a dangeous fault and and your Examiner considers its a danger to other road users your test will be stopped.

You are allowed 15 driver faults however if you get more than this or you get a serious or dangerous you have been unsuccessful.

When your driving test has ended you can ask for your Instructor to be called over if the didnt go with you on the test to listen to the result and feedback if they didnt go with you. Your examiner will tell you if you have passed or failed and will go through the test sheet with you and explain how you did during the test.

If you are unsuccessful you can re-book you test within 10 working days
If you are successful you will be given a certificate you can drive on this certificate until you receive your new licence.

Good Luck with your Driving test
